For nearly two decades Diversity Abroad has led the field of international education toward inclusive excellence. As the first organization solely dedicated to advancing diversity and inclusion practices and policies in international education, our work aligns and advances higher education's inclusive excellence and comprehensive internationalization goals.

Who We Are

With 300+ committed members around the world, Diversity Abroad is the leading membership consortium that inspires and supports educators, policy makers, and other stakeholders in advancing inclusive excellence in the international education and exchange field.

Diversity Abroad firmly believes in the power of global learning. The consortium's mandate is twofold. First, to ensure that all students—domestic and international—have equitable access to the benefits of global education and are able to leverage such educational opportunities to succeed in globally diverse academic settings, workplaces, and in the communities where they live. Second, to advance inclusive practices and policies that support diversifying the field and promote a climate belonging in the workplace.

What We Do

Diversity Abroad's work centers on four pillars— Education Abroad, International Students & Exchange, Global Learning at Home, and Career & Organizational Advancement — which serve as foundational elements in our mission to make international education opportunities accessible and beneficial for all students, regardless of background. The four pillars cover key aspects of the international operation at colleges and universities and global learning organizations. Here’s how each pillar contributes to incorporating inclusive excellence practices and policies into  international education:

 

Education Abroad: Properly administered, education abroad can be a high impact practice.This pillar focuses on ensuring that all students have equitable access to the benefits - educational, personal, and professional - afforded through education abroad programs. Diversity Abroad's approach to education abroad is holistic, from program design through reentry. 

International Students & Exchange: Emphasizing the importance of diversity and inclusion among incoming international students and exchange participants, this pillar focuses on  providing inclusive support for international students to support their well-being, success, and to foster deeper campus engagement.  

Global Learning at Home: Recognizing that travel is not required to gain global competencies, this pillar ensures global learning opportunities are available domestically through innovative domestic programs, virtual exchanges, and community engagement. 

 

Career & Organizational Advancement: Focusing on the professional development of educators and administrators, Diversity Abroad provides champion inclusive policies and practices that support belonging and success in the workplace and helps diversify the international education professional base. 

 

Together, these pillars reinforce Diversity Abroad’s commitment to advancing inclusive excellence in global education, ensuring students from all backgrounds hae equitable access to the benefits provided through global learning opportunities.

At Diversity Abroad, our methodology is encapsulated in the mantra "Passion, Process, Progress." This framework reflects our dedication to leverage inclusive excellence to enhance the impact international education has on students, higher education, and society as a whole.  

 

We are driven by a passionate commitment to inclusive excellence (Passion). We employ systematic and operationally sound approaches to tackle the complexities of international education (Process). Through adaptive strategies and stakeholder engagement, we achieve meaningful advancements in creating equitable access to the benefits of global learning (Progress).

DiversityAbroad.com - Our flagship website provides a place for students to access curated resources, build community and get connected to global programs and career opportunities from colleges and companies who are committed to ensuring more young people from diverse backgrounds are positioned to thrive in our interconnected world.

In 2019 Diversity Abroad announced its 5 year strategic plan, Diversity Abroad Forward.
